My First 14'er!

Can you believe it? Alyssa, Cassie, and Zach hike their first 14er, Grays Peak! Grays ranks as the 9th tallest 14er in the list of 53 total 14ers in Colorado. 14,270 feet of rocky beauty and they conquered it!

And meet the others who helped them get there... Paul, Kate, and Noah.

and Daddy too. This is only my second 14er, my kids will easily pass me. The kid on the left is ok by the way. I left him in the picture as proof of how crowded and popular this 14er really is!

More Pictures...
The journey begins at 8:30am.

Zach: I was excited to go up the mountain and thought it was going to be awesome. When I first saw the mountain I thought "I can do this". Then later on I started to get tired and thought "I can't do this". But I did! It was a dream to go up the mountain, I just never knew I could conquer it. When I went down, it was hard and it even took longer. I didn't drink enough water, so I was sick, and then I puked a little.

Cass: Me and Alyssa! I am not sure why I am smiling in this picture because I don't think I am ready to do this, but there is no going back now! We walked for a long long time, probably longer then I ever had, but it was worth it!! It is the most amazing thing when you get up there!! I think it was harder going up then it was going down......although going down was quite an adventure! Just one tip that i should probably give you if you ever go on a 14'er........ YOU SHOULD ALWAYS GO TO THE BATHROOM RIGHT BEFORE YOU CLIMB!!! Well...... lets just say one thing...I didn't.... but you get the picture now right? but I guess you could say that me and Alyssa have quite some good memories now!

Fresh legs and fresh feet.

Grays Peak to the left, Torreys Peak to the right. They look so far away. Its just under 4 miles to the top. Will we ever make it? Of course we will.

Cassie and Alyssa are ahead of everyone.

The essentials you must have on every 14er:

water,

tunes,

and smiles.

if you look close you can see people on the ridge. Zach said they are so tiny that we can squash them. I told him we are so tiny to them that they can squash us right back.

We still have to climb up that!?

"Hi mom"

Right about now we're getting a good leg burn. Some of us were about ready to give up but the peer/sibling pressure kept us going.

Almost at the top now and looking back at base camp, Steven's Gulch. If you look just to the right of the mountain in the middle you will see a dark patch of evergreens. That's where we started from.

Cassie is almost at the top. Can't stop now.

Alyssa made it to the top first with Cassie right behind her.

What a spectacular view from the top. Zach is taking it in and checking out the lake. He'll have a good story to tell when he goes back to school.

Cool shot of Torreys in the background.

Another view of Torreys from Grays.

The other side of Grays.

Making it to the summit: Priceless!
